The C Word

I think it's rare to find a person who has not watched a YouTube video at some point. Whether it's for information or for entertainment - there's literally a video for everything.

New figures now state that four billion videos are watched on the site each day & a massive one hour of footage per second is uploaded to the site. YouTube has even created a website to visualise the sheer quantity of videos available - onehourpersecond.com.

Being the star of a YouTube video can lead to thousands & even millions of views - there's even a show on E4 dedicated to some of the most popular videos on the site, Rude Tube.

So, with that many videos there for the viewing, there's no excuse to be bored again.

According to the Met Office we should 'be aware' of severe weather today and snow may be on its way by next week!

It's already a bit nippy is it not?

....This woman doesn't seem to think so (if you're eating put down your food). This lady is complaining that a nightclub discriminated against her age of 28 and turned her away from a club as she was wearing too few clothes for her age. I tweeted about it this morning and got a few fellow tweeters reacting a bit repulsed! At first, I thought good on her why grow up, live young and all that. This was before I read this article and saw a few more pictures....now I'm slightly repulsed!! This woman is a Mother of four!

I'm not sure if the nightclub bouncers were discriminating against her age, I think if anyone turned up looking like that they should get turned away!!

Not a good start to 2012 for the CarnivalCorporation!

The parent company of Costa Concordia has had to deal with thescandal based around the tragic cruise liner disaster but more scandal has comeout with regards to its other cruise liner company Cunard. It is alleged that an ex-crewman has assaulted youngsters on two different cruise liners!

Glad I’m not in that PR team!

My C Word today is…carnival, because I’msure that’s what the Carnival Corporation’s Communications department is likeat the moment!!

You may have seen Kung Hei Fat Choi trending on twitter and no, it's not a person but a greeting used to say "Happy Chinese New Year!" For those celebrating the Chinese lunar year, 15 days of celebrations begin today to see in the Year of the Dragon.

Chinese New Year is a time for families to get together, remember loved ones who have passed away and embrace the start of another year. In China, the Spring Festival was welcomed in with fireworks to drive away the evil sprits and tradition dictates that houses should be cleaned from top to bottom to sweep away any bad luck from the previous year and clear the way for good luck.

Due to the Dragon being considered the most auspicious sign of the Chinese zodiac, many are looking forward to this year with much excitement. Those born in Dragon years are thought to be intelligent, tenacious and highly successful and as such Chinese authorities are predicting a baby boom this year. This has been the case in previous Dragon years with the birth rate increasing by 5% in Hong Kong alone in 2000.

To share some of the excitement in London and witness the largest celebration of the New Year outside of China head on down to Chinatown this Sunday. The festival begins with a parade starting at Trafalgar Square at 10.15am.

Let's hope the Dragon treats us well this year and is lucky for us all!

I love a good photograph and on a night out I am usually the annoying person that has all the photographic evidence the morning after! However I've always looked at professional photos with a hint of envy wishing I could take better ones. So yesterday after years of "intending to" I started a digital photography course in order to get the best out of my camera.
It seems strange that I should be starting my photography journey when Kodak, one of the greats in the photography world has filed for bankruptcy. Whilst the announcement didn't surprise me, it did make me feel a little sad. I appreciate that many companies are struggling and many, such as Konica and Ilford have gone before but I feel an unexpected fondness for Kodak.

My first camera was a Kodak and I vividly remember receiving it from my Godfather when I was 8. I absoloutely loved it and was grateful it took APS films. Then I moved onto another Kodak model; smaller, lighter and with the amazing 3 photo sizes. Back then I remember it being the coolest thing. I even had a Kodak bum bag (I was young and they were socially acceptable back then!). It's fair to say I have a lot of childhood memories influenced and captured by Kodak.

Unfortunately despite being one of the first innovators in the digital market, Kodak failed to recognise when to stop clinging to their past successes and this has ultimately lead to their demise. Digital imaging has come a long way and now cameras are included in phones, mp3 players and even in tablet PCs. When we click a button we no longer need Kodak to do the rest.  I can't imagine an 8 year old receiving a camera with as much glee as I did anymore, the likely response would probably be "I asked for an iPhone!"

Kodak will now need to negotiate with its creditors and hopes to build a sustainable business within the printing field. I hope they manage to survive this.

My C word is Change. It really is the only constant and the harsh lesson learnt here is that we must all try to keep up.
